I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

Many appliances and fixtures have isolating valves that can be turned off. For example, the toilet will have an isolating tap below or beside the cistern. If you can’t locate a valve, or that does not stop the leak, then turn off the mains water shutoff valve to cut off all water to your house.

Now give our on call plumbers a ring, any hour of the day or night. We will be there as soon as we can to save the day.

While waiting for the plumber to arrive, remove any significant things close to the leak, and mop up any water or place a bucket to catch any drips. If you have turned the mains water off, switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
