I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

If water is still leaking, turn the water off at the nearest isolating valve and then at the mains tap outside. If you cannot locate the water main isolation valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on all the cold taps inside and out to help depressurise the pipework and reduce the leak.

While waiting, remove any important items close to the leak, and clean up any water or put a bucket to catch any drips. If you have turned the mains water off, switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, a lot of appliances and fixtures have their own isolating taps as well.
