I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

Many appliances and fixtures have service valves that can be turned off. For example, the toilet will have a valve below or beside the cistern. If you can’t find a valve, or that doesn’t stop the leak, then turn off the mains isolating valve to cut off all the water to your property.

Once that is done, give us a call, no matter what the day or time is. We will be there shortly to get things sorted.

In the meantime, begin wiping up any water, place a container to catch drips, and remove significant items from the area. If the house water is turned off, then also switch off the heating for the hot water.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
