I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn off the water at the nearest service valve and then at the mains valve outside. If you can’t find the main valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on all the cold taps inside and out to help depressurise the pipework and minimise the leak.

Once that is done, give us a call, whatever the day or time is. We will be there shortly to resolve the problem.

While waiting for the plumber to arrive, remove any significant items from the area, and wipe up any water or position a container to catch any drips. If you’ve turned the mains water off, also switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, a lot of appliances and fixtures have their own isolating taps also.
